Tuesday 04/17 Writing - Taking Opportunities to Stand and Be Counted

Purpose: As an argument writer, I can stand up for what I believe in and use my writing to build a strong case for my claim.
  1. Connection:  Chocolate Milk in Schools
  2. Teaching:   Today I want to teach you that social activists fight to make a change.  They get involved with things they know and care about, do their research, and then write or speak to affect the ways others see that same topic.  To become social activists, you need to use all the skills you've learned to argue for things that matter to you.
  3. Engagement:  Possible Topics for YOUR Next Argument Piece
    • Plan your argument
    • Rehearse your writing
    • Flash draft your argument
  4. Next Steps: We will begin reworking  our new argument pieces tomorrow
    • Add powerful quotes to strengthen your argument.
    • Gather and rewrite evidence in your own words.
    • Explicitly connect your reasons to your evidence: don't make your readers infer!
    • Continually ask yourself, "What are you trying to teach/show/make your reader believe?"
