- Connection: Cake Choices
 - Teaching: Today I want to teach you that a good argument is a bit like a layer cake--just the right balance of dense researched evidence layered between rich thinking. To achieve this balance, you add your own thinking and explanations.
 - Engagement: Developing Thinking About Evidence
 - Application: Redraft your letter and add in your thinking to show your voice in your argument writing.
 - Add powerful quotes to strengthen your argument.
 - Paraphrase! Rewrite evidence in your own words.
 - Explicitly connect your reasons to your evidence: don't make your readers infer!
 - Continually ask yourself, "What are you trying to teach/show/make your reader believe?"
