Thursday 04/12 Writing - Balancing Evidence with Analysis

Purpose: As an argument writer, I can find a balance between my evidence and my voice.
  1. Connection:  Cake Choices
  2. Teaching:   Today I want to teach you that a good argument is a bit like a layer cake--just the right balance of dense researched evidence layered between rich thinking.  To achieve this balance, you add your own thinking and explanations.
  3. Engagement:  Developing Thinking About Evidence
  4. Application: Redraft your letter and add in your thinking to show your voice in your argument writing.
    • Add powerful quotes to strengthen your argument.
    • Paraphrase!  Rewrite evidence in your own words.
    • Explicitly connect your reasons to your evidence: don't make your readers infer!
    • Continually ask yourself, "What are you trying to teach/show/make your reader believe?"
