Tuesday 04/10 Writing - Using Quotations to Bolster an Argument

Purpose: As an argument writer, I can add relevant quotes to make my argument stronger.
  1. Connection:  Before and After
  2. Teaching:   Today I want to teach you that argument writers search their texts for quotations that will bring their side of the argument to life.
  3. Engagement:  What makes a quotation powerful?
  4. Application: Rework your draft and add powerful quotes to strengthen your argument; but be sure to "unpack" the quote to show how it relates to your claim.
    • Paraphrase!  Rewrite evidence in your own words.
    • Explicitly connect your reasons to your evidence: don't make your readers infer!
    • Continually ask yourself, "What are you trying to teach/show/make your reader believe?"
